Angus the cat keeps widowed Wally company

Written by Ryman Healthcare | Aug 26, 2025

They say a dog is a man’s best friend, but clearly they haven’t met Angus the cat — the affectionate feline who shares his days with owner Wally at their Ryman Village.

This sociable grey and white cat became something of a celebrity two years ago when Wally’s granddaughter Sarah uploaded a video to TikTok showing her Nana Helen and Poppy Wally taking Angus for strolls around the village gardens in his trolley and on a leash.

The video quickly gained traction online and even led to a feature on local tv, where Angus — riding in his custom ‘cat carriage’ — charmed viewers and village residents alike with his relaxed and friendly nature.

Since Helen’s passing in June, Angus’s companionship has meant more than ever to Wally, with Sarah sharing a heartfelt update on TikTok.

“After 69 years with Nana it’s the simple routines and Angus that help Poppy keep going,” Sarah posted. “Cats can be a man’s best friend too!”

“He’s great company,” agrees Wally.

“We still go for our walks around the building and around the village. He rolls around and carries on and anyone who’s out, he has to visit them.”

Although the colder months have kept the pair indoors more often, Angus has proven to be a top-notch snuggler, curling up with Wally for pats and purrs — especially at bedtime.

“He sleeps on the bed,” says Wally. “He actually sleeps on top of me!” he laughs.

Angus chose Wally and Helen as his people not long before they moved into the village in July 2021 — a move Helen had championed. The couple were pleased to settle in while staying close to their beloved community and connections.

Angus quickly became part of their daily rhythm, enjoying regular outings in his carriage and short walks on his leash, making friends with fellow residents along the way.

Though he was affectionate with both Helen and Wally, it was clear from the beginning that Angus was ‘Wal’s cat’.

“He’s a man’s cat,” agrees Wally. “Cats are often like that I think.”

Sarah says Wally and Angus have built a strong online following, with one recent video attracting over a million views and even making the news in the United States.

Losing her Nana Helen was deeply sad, she said.

“I’m so grateful Poppy still has Angus by his side.

“Their bond is something really special, and I think Angus has brought Poppy a lot of comfort and companionship during such a difficult time.

“There’s something incredibly healing about the quiet presence of an animal, especially when dealing with grief.”

For now, Wally continues his daily walks with Angus — just two old mates enjoying each other’s company.

At 14 years old, Angus is about the same age in cat years as Wally, who turns 94 in October — making them the most purrrfect companions.
