Ryman Healthcare COVID-19 update 21 August

Welcome to another Friday update, where I share with you some of the things that are happening behind the scenes to help keep COVID-19 out of Weary Dunlop and Nellie Melba.

One thing I’m sure many of you are wondering is what will happen if we do have a confirmed case of the virus at your loved one’s village.

This is something we have prepared for over many months, so let me give you an overview.

If your family member tests positive for COVID-19 we will immediately call you directly to tell you.

If your family member is not directly affected, we will contact you via text message and email.

That communication will include a phone number you can call if you have any queries about how the infected resident is being managed, and what it means for other residents at the village.

We will follow up with regular communications via email and text in the days and weeks that follow.

All residents, team members and anyone else who might have been in contact with the infected person will be traced, tested and go into isolation.

For their own safety, and the safety of everyone at the village, a resident who tests positive for COVID-19 will be transferred to a hospital in most cases.

If the resident cannot be transferred to hospital, they will be cared for in a separate isolation wing staffed by a specially trained team who will be completely segregated from other staff and residents.

Our ‘COVID Outbreak Emergency Plan’ will be activated as soon we have a confirmed case of the virus.

While the scope of that plan is too broad to cover off here, I can tell you that it was reviewed just yesterday by three auditors from the Victorian Aged Care Response Centre.

Their assessment?

“We have been auditing two [aged care] facilities every day in Melbourne for the last two and half weeks. We have not seen anyone who has got a better plan than your facility – you will be very hard to beat.”

As I outlined last week, we’re doing absolutely everything we can to keep COVID-19 out of our villages. We know with this virus, though, that we can’t assume that will be enough.

If we do have a confirmed case, I want you to know that we will move quickly and calmly to contain the risk and we will keep you informed every step of the way.
