Ryman Healthcare’s plan to build a retirement village and aged care facility in Burwood East, Melbourne, has been given the green light.

Whitehorse City Council has given development approval for the project, which will be Ryman’s third village in Melbourne.

The 2.5-hectare site, located prominently on Burwood Highway, is part of a $500 million Frasers Property Australia redevelopment of the wider 20.5-hectare site.

The village is slated to include 132 aged care beds, 91 assisted living suites, and 174 independent apartments. It will be home to more than 400 people.

The first residents are expected to move in during the second half of 2019. The project will be completed in mid-2022.

The purchase of the Burwood site from Frasers Property was announced in February 2016.

The company successfully applied to sub-divide the site so the Ryman village could be developed.

Frasers' redevelopment will include 900 homes and a large new retail centre.
