All Ryman Australian villages offer purpose-built dementia care facilities that provide a secure haven in a warm and homely environment for people with dementia and wandering issues.
Our dementia care units incorporate many unique design features to help residents find their way around – such as interesting wall decals and textural wall fittings. On each resident's door, a memory box has been fitted containing special possessions that help them recognise their room.
The open plan dining rooms and lounge areas encourage freedom of movement for the residents. This allows them to wander around the secure outdoor courtyards and garden areas, which have been specifically allocated to our special care residents.
Art, music, aromatherapy, exercise and water therapy are some of the activities we include in our extensive activities programme. This supports all degrees of physical and mental dependency, and has a positive impact on our residents’ quality of life.
Our centrally located nurse station and closed-circuit monitoring system ensures care staff can non-intrusively watch over residents while preserving their dignity.
Our staff are trained dementia care specialists, and look after residents in a positive and therapeutic manner.
In 2017, we launched our Ryman Delicious menus. Our aim was to shake up our approach to food and how it is delivered. To achieve this, we literally went back to the drawing board to survey what our residents’ preferences were.
In listening to our residents, we could capture the essence of what is really important to them. Cravings for old favourites are satisfied by providing the comfort of the classics, but we keep it ‘fresh’ with innovative choices. Think roast chicken alongside slow-cooked pork and coconut curry.
Fresh is the name of the game – meals prepared on-site using fresh seasonal produce. The aim of Ryman Delicious is to create meals with an abundance of flavour and presentation that is a feast for the eyes. Not to mention we offer a choice of three meals at lunchtime, which includes a vegetarian option.
For many of our residents, coming together for a meal is a highlight. At Ryman, we aim to provide an experience to remember and an opportunity to connect.

The Ryman Engage programme is about thinking outside the square to create a balanced and varied selection of activities for residents.
Activities have been specifically tailored for our dementia care residents. Art, music, aromatherapy, exercise and water therapy are some of the activities we include in our extensive activities programme. This supports all degrees of physical and mental dependency, and has a positive impact on our residents’ quality of life.
Our secure open plan areas provide residents with the freedom to be involved in activities, but also the space for movement should they need to move around. Activities are also shorter in length to avoid long periods of concentration.
At Ryman, we recognised that our exercise programmes for dementia care residents had to be customised in order to provide real benefits. Triple A is a prescriptive programme that has been designed by qualified exercise physiologists, employed by Ryman Healthcare.
The evidence based exercise programme focuses on assisting dementia care residents to maintain their independence for as long as possible. This is achieved by performing functional movements to assist with everyday activities. Movements are designed to be simple, so that they are easy to follow for people with dementia.
The Triple A programme also incorporates therapeutic components such as music and social interaction, which go hand in hand with functional movement exercises. Engagement with music is a wonderful tool which improves mood and can trigger happy memories, and the encouragement of social interaction is a crucial component.
Our experience shows us that consistency is the key. Therefore, Triple A exercises are performed twice a day, seven days a week, and have been strategically planned to capture our residents’ attention for just the right amount of time.
