How care and connection made Bert Newton Village home for Effie
92-year-old Effie Trellis has always been independent, social, and full of warmth — qualities her daughter Maria says have only grown stronger since she moved into the care centre at Bert Newton Village almost a year ago.
What began as a big decision for their family has become a source of comfort, connection, and peace of mind.
“Walking in for the first time, I felt this sense of calm,” said Maria.
“Everyone was so welcoming. It wasn’t just staff doing their job, they genuinely cared. Mum picked up on that straight away, and it made the transition so much easier for both of us.”
“The minute you walk into a Ryman village, you know it’s different — it’s warm, open, and a community, and Mum has really found her place here.”
Effie speaks about her life at the village with a smile that rarely leaves her face.
“I really do feel at home here,” said Effie.
“The staff are wonderful. They check on me, they make me laugh, and they know the things I like. It feels like family.”
Over the months, Effie has settled into a rhythm she enjoys. Familiar faces at meals, activities she looks forward to, and friendships formed in small everyday moments.
“There’s always something going on,” said Effie.
“We chat, we play games, tell stories and keep each other company, it’s lovely.”

For Maria, watching her mum thrive has brought immense reassurance.
“It’s hard to explain the relief you feel when you know your parent is truly supported,” said Maria.
“Mum isn’t just cared for — she’s valued, that makes all the difference.”
She says what stands out most is the way the team interacts with Effie.
“They treat her with such dignity, they take the time to get to know her, to understand what she needs, and to make her feel special.”
“Even when I visit, they greet me by name and tell me how Mum’s been going — you can’t fake that kind of kindness.”
Effie has noticed the little gestures too — and they’ve quickly become meaningful parts of her day.
“It’s the small things,” said Effie.
“A cup of tea made just the way I like it. Someone stopping to have a chat, feeling seen and heard. You don’t get lost in the crowd here.”
Maria also appreciates how Effie has found companionship and a sense of belonging within the village.
“She talks about her friends constantly.”
“Mum has become so sociable again. It’s beautiful to see her laughing and enjoying company.”

For the family, Bert Newton Village has given them something priceless: confidence in the care Effie receives and the freedom to enjoy their time together without worry.
“We laugh more now,” said Maria.
“Our visits aren’t filled with stress or concern. We sit, we talk, we just enjoy each other — that’s a gift.”
As for Effie, she’s grateful for the people around her and the life she’s built in the village.
“I’m happy here.”
“I feel safe, I feel cared for, and I feel like I belong. The staff, everyone — they all love me and look after me. I couldn’t ask for more.”
For Maria, those words say everything.
“Seeing Mum content and supported — that’s when you know you’ve made the right choice.”
“Bert Newton Village has been that place for us. The sense of community, the care, and the warmth — it’s unmatched. Knowing Mum is happy, safe, and surrounded by people who truly care gives me so much peace of mind.”
