What is residential respite care?

Residential respite care at Ryman Healthcare is short-term care provided in our aged care homes. It’s designed for times when extra support is needed, such as after a hospital stay or when a caregiver needs a break. The length of stay depends on your needs and availability in our villages. During respite care, residents receive expert care, comfortable accommodation, and are part of an inclusive village community.

When is residential respite care useful?

Residential respite care is useful when you are recovering from illness or surgery and need short-term support, when your usual caregiver is temporarily unavailable, or if you are considering a move to residential aged care in the future.

At Ryman Healthcare, residential respite care involves a short-term stay in one of our modern care homes. We assess your needs and create a personalised care plan. During your stay, you’ll have access to caregiving and nursing support, comfortable accommodation, freshly prepared meals, and social activities to help you stay active and connected.

How much does respite care cost?

The cost of respite care at Ryman Healthcare depends on your individual needs and whether you are eligible for a government subsidy. Additional service fees may apply depending on the village and your preferences. Contacting your local Ryman village is the best way to receive a clear breakdown of potential costs.

Who pays for respite care?

Residential respite care at Ryman Healthcare can be paid for through government subsidies or private payment. Eligible residents may receive government support following an Aged Care Assessment, though a basic daily fee, booking fee, or optional service fees may still apply. If you are not eligible for a subsidy, you can choose to pay privately, with costs varying based on care needs, location, and length of stay.

How much respite care are you allowed?

Eligible older Australians can access up to 63 days of government-subsidised residential respite care each financial year, with possible extensions of up to 21 days if approved by an Aged Care Assessor. There is no set limit on privately funded respite care at Ryman Healthcare.

Respite care

Respite care provides temporary care in a range of circumstances. You may need some rehabilitation after a hospital stay, or perhaps a little extra help – whether it’s for a single night or a few weeks.

If you still live in your own home, a short stay at one of our care centres could be a welcome break from your usual routine.

Respite care is often fully funded*, therefore it's worth taking advantage of the welcome break that a stay in one of our villages can provide.

And if you’re thinking about making a permanent move to a Ryman village, why not spend some time with us in respite care? This way you can experience the lifestyle at a Ryman aged-care centre before you make your decision.

*A needs assessment will be required to determine eligibility for government funding.

There are two main ways to pay for residential respite care at Ryman: either through government subsidies or private payment. Even if you are eligible to receive a subsidy, you may be required to pay a portion of the cost.

Paying by subsidy:

The Australian Government may provide you with financial support for respite care if you’ve completed an Aged Care Assessment and have been assessed as eligible for a care subsidy. If you stay in a Ryman care home, this will be paid directly to us. Even if you are receiving a subsidy, you may still need to pay:

A basic daily fee of up to 85% of the single basic Age Pension (for residential respite care).
A booking fee to reserve a place. This may be refundable.
Service fees for optional extras not covered by the government subsidy.

Paying privately:

If you’re not eligible for government support, you can opt to pay privately for residential respite care. The costs will vary depending on the type of care, your location, and the duration and level of support required.
